Roo.uh

When nothing around you bothers you.

Ruhe is a trusted editorial directory and platform for genuinely non-toxic, restorative places to stay, for the conscious traveller and for the people in hospitality embodying true wellness.

Most hotels, rental properties and wellness sanctuaries are designed to impress. Very few are designed to restore. Ruhe exists to close that gap, surfacing places that are quiet, clean, and genuinely good for your nervous system, and building the standard that explains why most places aren't.

The Ruhe Standard

What we actually look for.

Eight categories, built from the things most travel content never mentions and most hotels never check.

I

Air

Purification, mould-free, no VOCs from cleaning products or furnishings.

II

Water

Filtered drinking and shower water, mineral quality, unchlorinated where it matters.

III

Materials

Natural bedding, low-VOC paint, non-toxic cleaning products, natural furnishings.

IV

Light

Working blackout, maximised daylight, circadian-friendly lighting after dark.

V

Acoustics

Genuine quiet, soft furnishings that absorb sound, no intrusive HVAC or noise.

VI

Mould

Proactively managed, controlled humidity, no visible mould, ever.

VII

EMF

Routers away from sleeping areas, considered wiring, no unrequested smart devices in bedrooms.

VIII

Sensory load

No synthetic fragrance, minimal clutter, a calm atmosphere your nervous system can feel.

The founder story

The first thing I do when I arrive at a hotel or Airbnb is check the place for mould. Bathroom, kitchen, walls. Before I unpack. Before I do anything else.

Five years ago my health changed in ways I didn't see coming. I became incredibly reactive to my environment. To mould, to synthetic fragrance, to chemical cleaning products, to EMF's. To environments most people walk through without a second thought.

But whether you recognise it or not, these environments affect all of us.

That restless night's sleep that leaves you more tired than when your head hit the pillow.

The brain fog clouding your day.

The anxiety that creeps up without explanation.

It's all connected to the spaces we inhabit.

I love to travel. After years spent at home feeling unwell, being in the world again feels like medicine. But finding truly safe, genuinely healthy places to stay? That became its own kind of exhausting.

The hotels marketing themselves as wellness retreats were pumping synthetic fragrance through every vent.

The spa stays had mould in the showers, chlorine in the pools and called themselves 'restorative'.

The language of wellbeing was everywhere.

The reality of it was almost nowhere.

Booking an Airbnb became a source of pure anxiety. I would spend hours studying property photos, zooming in on corners and grout lines looking for black mould, for damp, for anything that might tell me what I was actually walking into. And still, I'd arrive to find damp walls, rooms filled with chemical detergents and owners who had no framework for what their guests actually needed.

I realised there was nowhere to go. No trusted resource. No platform that evaluated spaces against what actually matters for the people inside them. The air, the water, the materials, the absence of things that secretly make people ill.

So I decided to build it.

RUHE, pronounced roo·uh, means when nothing around you bothers you.

An editorial platform curating hotels, Airbnbs and retreats that are genuinely non-toxic. Not aesthetically wellness. Actually, verifiably, healthy.

The spaces where you can fully exhale.

If you've ever left a hotel feeling worse than when you arrived, this is for you. If you're tired of wellness theatre and ready for the real thing, follow along. We're just getting started.

Ruhe is for the conscious wellness travellers and hosts alike.

And if you're a property owner who wants to be part of what's coming, we'd love to hear from you.
